Document every single aspect: operating system version, installed software (web servers, databases, control panels, applications), network configurations (IP addresses, subnets, DNS settings), firewall rules, cron jobs, user accounts, and data locations. Identify all dependencies – what services rely on this server, and what external systems does it communicate with? This detailed inventory is your blueprint for the new environment.

Crucially, establish a robust backup strategy before migration. Perform full backups of all data, databases, and configurations, storing them securely off-site. Verify database connectivity, email functionality, and remote access (SSH/RDP). Check network connectivity, firewall rules, and DNS resolution. Monitor server logs closely for any errors or warnings. Be prepared to roll back if critical issues are discovered. Communicate clearly with your team and users about maintenance windows and potential disruptions.
